Ectomorph? Is that some kinda of Transformer?

Welcome back to the How to Determine if you’re a Hardgainer series. So far we’ve introduced the notion that not all of us are hardgainers. Next we came up with a definition that not only clearly defined the term Hardgainer but attempted to demystify all the vagueness behind the term. So what’s next you say? We need to determine what body type you have. To be a little more specific we need to determine if you are an ectomorph.
What is an ectomorph?
No it’s not a Transformer Robot in Disguise its actually one of the 3 somatotypes Dr. William H. Sheldon came up with in a study over 60 years ago. Without getting into too much detail he studied body types of over 4000 college aged men and assigned them into three body types: Endomorphs, Mesomorphs, and Ectomorphs.
So why does this matter to you?
Well simply put, if you have Ectomorphic traits it’s is highly likely that you are going to have a hard time putting on muscle and gaining weight. If this happens to be the case it does not mean you are doomed. You’ll just have to work a lot harder to get the results you desire.
Below is a list of all three body types with their common physical and personality traits. Few people fit neatly into one specific category but for the sake of simplicity I’m going to refer to only the 3 general body types.

Still think you’re a Hardgainer?
If you’ve been able to somewhat relate to the physical and personality traits of the ectomorph above you may indeed be a hardgainer. But not so fast there are still two more parts to this series. Be sure to subscribe via RSS or Email to find out when the part 3 comes out.

Hey guys I have a quick question, when I was young I was a chubby boy, I was born chubby and as I grew I consumed lots of junk food, like tons of it and of course became fat, not sumo fat but you know, fat. At 12 years old I wanted to change so I first cut off candy and began noticing great results then I began to walk 30 minutes everyday and made great results! I then became average weight and was proud of myself, then one day my father bought a treadmill when I was 13 I researched ways to lose fat on the
On the treadmill and heard interval training in the morning before breakfast was the best so I did interval training for 10 to 15 minutes everyday before breakfast, then I bought some 2 , 5 , 10 and 25 pound weights and began to use them, I would workout once everyweek to give my muscles time to grow. I would get my 8+ hrs of sleep. I put on 25 to 30 pounds of muscle I think and got a 6 pack. Now im 14 and I became too skinny and have some stretchy skin from rapid weight loss. So I wanted to put on some
Hey guys, when I was young I would consume lots of junk food and became fat. When I turned twelve I wanted to become strong and muscular so I cut off the candy and junk and began to eat healthy. I would workout aswell. One day my father bought a treadmill I looked up ways to burn fat quickly on the treadmill and learned interval training was best in the morning without breakfast so thats what I did for about a year. At thirteen I had a ok physique, I had a 6 pack and some what muscle definition. Now im
Nvm the one above me, as I was saying I wanted to put on some lean muscle mass but since I was fat before its easier for me to become fat again, the 500 extra calories barely turns into lean muscle mass and turns into fat! Im 6`1 and im 14 and weigh 123 pounds please tell me whether im the 3 morphs and what I can do to get lean muscle mass with a great physique and get rid of this stretchy skin. Thank you to all the replyers in advance!
Hey Raiyuden,
You’re still growing so no reason to panic. What you need to focus on is eating properly and getting proper exercise.
You are obviously underweight so your going to have in increase your food intake. Don’t worry so much about putting on lean muscle mass, just focus on getting to a healthy weight.

Who does normally look older: a short but muscular mesomorph or a tall lanky ectomorph if they are both the same age (like 17)?
There is no clear cut rule as to who usually looks older but ectomorphs tend to look a little on the young side. Mesomorphs look more mature and older at a younger age.
That’s my experience too.
Example: A friend of mine is only 5ft 6in or so, but most people think he is 21 or 22. Another friend is like 6ft 6in, but he is very lanky and he has quite a baby face, so most people think he is only 14 or 15. They are both 17 years old, but the shorter one is treated like an adult, the taller one like a little child.
Can you believe that??
I’m 16 years old, 99.4 lbs ish about 5ft 4, I am muscular because training but still skinnyish. I’ve still got a lot of growing to do but want to fill out more, what should I do to achieve this. Does that make me a ectomorph?
